Howto & StyleCareers by CareersVideo 29 Jul 2009 at 2:08pm
Careers
Produced by Nancy Christy Heinen for Pathways to Independence. Becky recalls her guidance counselor advising her to look into secretarial jobs, "So I could sit behind a desk all day," assuming that was all she was capable of. David recounts how he bristled when people told him to be "reasonable" in his expectation s for the future. Melvin remembers sitting in a chicago hospital with other kids who were victims of gang violence, realizing that if he wanted to be taken seriously, he'd have to earn it-- but how? Low expectations throw up barriers for a woman with muscular dystrophy, a man with cerebral palsy, a black man with paraplegia. Studies show that students with disabilities are filtered from exposure to opportunities for higher education and vocational training. And yet, these and two other individuals featured in "Careers" demonstrate how higher education is the key for an individual with a disability to break through the barricades that traditionally block disabled professionals from entering the career world. The video illustrates that a wheelchair-- or any other disability-- does not prevent a person from pursuing higher education and a future more rewarding than simply performing a job. We hope it will inspire, and educate, those with crucial influence on young people with disabilities, and that it will spark the imaginations and aspirations of students to the real world possibilities that can-- and should-- open the door to finding a path to a career. improving
your mindset...
Get to the Top with a Growth Mindset
John A. Marinchek
LAST UPDATED:
Achievers get to the top of their goals with a growth mindset because they focus
and working hard. People with a fixed mindset are distracted by challenge.
Carol S. Dweck in her book, Mindset, The New Psychology Of Success, emphasizes
the positive and beneficial nature of a growth mindset, which is said to be
effective in helping people realize their potential. This growth mindset is
compared to the burdens of a fixed mindset, which are said to bring many
negatives to individuals who possess this quality.
Stretching Beyond the Possible
Dweck explained, "Sometimes people with the growth mindset stretch themselves so
far that they do the impossible." She referred to Christopher Reeve, who, was
thrown from a horse in 1995. His neck was broken and his spinal cord was severed
from his brain. This left him totally paralyzed below the neck.
Reeve's doctors gave him no hope for recovery. Nevertheless, Reeve continued to
treat his body with electrical stimulation. Five years latter, Reeve began to
regain some movement. Dweck pointed out, "First it happened in his hands, then
his arms, then legs, and then torso."
Reeve stretched his abilities, he managed to change the ways in which science
thinks about the nervous system and its potential for recovery. Now people with
spinal cord injuries have more hope than Christopher Reeve had at the time of
his accident. This is because Reeve wouldn't settle due to his growth mindset.
Thriving on a Sure Thing
Dweck points out that people with a fixed mindset thrive when things are "safely
within their grasp." She emphasizes that when things get very challenging, fixed
mindset people do not feel very smart or confident and they lose interest.
During her research with fixed mindset children, Dweck states that they gave
some fifth graders puzzles which they loved. However, when Dweck's team made the
puzzles harder the fixed minded students lost interest.
Children with the growth mindset continued to love working the more difficult
puzzles. These difficult puzzles were their favorites. People with growth
mindsets believe challenge and hard work will give them satisfaction and
accomplishment. They are not intimidated by setbacks or failures.
Meaning of Effort
People with a growth mindset believe that even geniuses have to work hard. They
appreciate that some people are endowed with great intelligence or talents, but
it still takes hard work to turn that ability into accomplishment. On the other
hand, people who possess a fixed mindset believe that gifted or intelligent
people don't need to invest effort and hard work.
Dweck offers an example of a winning growth mindset with the famous racehorse,
Seabiscuit. "Here was a horse who was so broken, he was supposed to be put to
sleep." In fact, the entire team of people behind Seabiscuit the jockey, the
owner, the trainer were all damaged people. Yet, these people transformed
themselves into winners with hard work and determination.
A Growth Mindset Gives Strength to High Achievers
People with a growth mindset get to to the top of their goals because they are
not intimidated by challenges and setbacks. They view problems as learning
opportunities, rather than failures. These high achievers tackle their
challenges with clear focus and hard work.
Individuals with a mixed mindset function at an optimum level when they are
engaged in a sure thing. It's believed that when a situation becomes challenging
or problematic, these people have a tendency to lose interest and walk away.

Job Interview Anecdotes
17 May 2012 at 8:56am There's nothing like a good story to enhance your qualifications for a job. When told effectively, these anecdotes can be a real difference-maker for you during a job interview. One of the big misconceptions about these stories is that they have to come from your career experiences. While those are certainly the easiest to present, you can actually use stories from any point in your personal life. You just have to make sure it shows off a side of you that makes you attractive for the job. Now that you know this, it's time to determine what you want to present to the hiring manager.
The first thing you should do when selecting an anecdote is to figure out what skills you want to highlight. A good way to speed up this decision is to look at the job description the organization posted. Employers will often sprinkle key words throughout their descriptions that describe the type of abilities for which they are looking. You should keep a close eye for words like "management," "analytical skills," etc.
If you are unable to find any of these words in the description, consider contacting the hiring manager asking what particular skills they are looking for in candidates.
Remember that the story you tell serves only to illustrate the points you made in your resume and cover letter. This means it should be short and to the point, so cut out any irrelevant aspects. If you are able to trim your anecdote down to the main essentials, you will find that it will be a very successful way to prove your worth.
